2 Minutes

Having supported many employees take that next step over my 25 year HR career, I wanted to share some of the top tips I always recommend when going for that management promotion.

1 Master Your Current Role

Ensure that you are at the top of your game in your current role by demonstrating a strong work ethic and consistently delivering will certainly gain the attention of your senior managers. Look for ways to push forward with improving ways of working for the benefit of the services to the customer and ultimately to the Company.

2 Ask for Feedback

Proactively ask for feedback not only from your manager, but also from your peers – don’t wait for your annual review! This will demonstrate you are willing to learn and will also highlight any areas you can develop in.

3 Demonstrate your commitment

Look for areas that you can get involved in that will widen your knowledge and skills but also demonstrates your commitment. For example, could you volunteer or shadow a colleague for 30 minutes and work a little later to cover your own role.

4 Build Relationships

Network, network, network. Look across different departments and at different levels for opportunities – ask your manager, and your managers manager who you could be speaking with or projects you could get involved in to widen your relationships.

5 Develop your Leadership Skills

Research what good leadership looks like. Search out good leaders in your organisation and ask if you could you be mentored by one. Seek to attend mini leadership courses. Look for opportunities to become involved in leading or collaborating on projects.
