Great employees are not found, they are made, so how is this done?

Whilst you are looking for perfection in candidates it can lead to you missing out on hiring some fantastic future employees, ones who have the potential to grow and develop within your organisation. Rather than focusing on what the candidate many not have, you need to see their strengths and the potential to invest in their development.

A few suggestions to help you to find and nurture mouldable employees:

Job posting
Don’t be unrealistic with your expectations, you want to attract the right talent not scare them off. Drill the post down to the absolute essential skills: the ones they need now and the ones they can learn later.

Look for potential
When reviewing candidates look beyond the current skillset and experience, assess their potential for growth, willingness to learn and their adaptability to new challenges. Finding and hiring candidates with a growth mindset can lead to long-term success within your business.

Company values / culture
Will the candidate embrace your company culture and values? Assess their soft skills such as communication, problem solving, teamwork, that are essential for the role during your interview and consider how those attributes will align with your companies culture and values.

Create a culture of learning
Show your employees that your company cares about their professional & personal development through encouraging continual learning. Offer comprehensive training and development programs that will help mould your new employees and enhance their skills. Investing in your people’s growth will not only benefit the individual but also strengthen your company’s talent pool.

Internship & Apprenticeship Programs
This can be an excellent way to find your mouldable talent and provide them with practical experience and skill development. Whilst experience is valuable, giving candidates with potential and willingness to learn a chance will produce loyalty in your employees and increase retention.

Ensure you set clear expectations
When onboarding your new employees clearly communicate expectations and goals. Provide them with a roadmap for growth and development, this can motivate them to excel in their role.

Reward Progress
Never forget to celebrate and recognise your employees’ achievements and progress. Positive reinforcement can inspire them to continue to develop their skills and contributing to your business.
